Call the Car is more than just a healthcare transportation brokerage. They are a care partner and believe medical transportation is a part of healthcare and should be accessible for all, regardless of whether a member is eligible for a healthcare plan or not.
Founded in 2010 by CEO, Michelle Tyson, MD, Michelle identified a gap in healthcare
delivery and the healthcare service provided across California, preventing the most vulnerable from attending critical medical appointments and community services. As of today in 2024, Call the Car is the largest non-emergency medical transportation brokerage in California, completing 6-7 million trips annually.
Coming from a family of healthcare providers and with more than two decades of experience working as a Family Doctor, CEO Michelle has an extensive understanding of the Californian communities she serves and their unique needs. Combining this medical knowledge with the logistical expertise of its team, Call the Car has revolutionized non-emergency medical transportation to create an entirely new delivery network, with unparalleled quality control.
Services: More than a door-to-door customer service model, Call the Car combines the characteristics of a software company, a broker model, and an owner-operated fleet business to better serve their client’s medical transportation needs through innovation.
Utilizing the logistical excellence of its team, CTC uses several services to deliver a more streamlined and seamless service and enhance members' experiences. Using automated technology, they can remind patients about their upcoming appointments, notify them of upcoming health plan expirations, and assist them with requesting or scheduling a ride through its CTC-GO app.
A team of passionate individuals, Call the Car's dedicated Case Monitoring Team can coordinate care with members’ case managers, doctors, or nurses, update medical personnel, and report on the status of their patients in real-time. Operating in California, CTC understands the unique medical needs of the communities it serves, but equally importantly, CTC recognizes healthcare continues to evolve and change and so must they and its service. As a business, they believe that to provide a quality and compassionate service, it’s important to use value-driven solutions, by coordinating with the communities it represents. Via a dedicated Facility Outreach team, CTCs meet regularly with the facilities they coordinate care with, such as dialysis centers and SNFs, to gain feedback, answer questions, and increase trust.
Call the Car also meets regularly with local community associations, key people, and advocates it serves to proactively address population health needs and generate continuous improvement within the business. Call the Car makes strategic and informed decisions based on the information generated by these communities and works diligently to ensure all patients receive the transportation services and access to healthcare they are entitled to.
Call the Car's Partners:
In California, a patient is often in the position of waiting 3 months for a medical appointment so, while CTC utilizes its fleet of medical vehicles, as a business they also work with local and reliable subcontractors who specialize in local transportation. It also partners with giant rideshare companies Lyft, and Uber, to improve operation efficiency and driver availability.
To ensure the business evolves with ever-changing healthcare needs, as a company, CTC partners with several excellent health plan providers who share its values. This includes LA Care, Central California Alliance, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), BlueShield of California, California Department for Public Health, Promise Health Plan, Apple Care Medical Group, and Aids Healthcare Foundation.
Next Steps:
As a business, Call the Car is more than just a transportation provider, instead, its focus is to empower its members, care providers, and health plans by providing wrap-around services and enabling healthcare access. Looking ahead, they aim to become more connected with the communities they serve and provide guaranteed access to essential care services for even more patients, even across the most remote parts of California.
Equally invested in making a difference in the long-term, Call the Car is steering the transportation industry to be more focused on a sustainable future by reducing its carbon footprint on the climate by introducing more hybrid vehicles to the fleet. Call the Car argues a green fleet will lead to the lowered use of fossil fuels and cost savings for its members.
Moving forward, its commitment remains the same, and CTC hopes to scale the business and grow its Call the Car fleet to 100 medical vehicles, equipped with medical teams and equipment that would drive to patients' doors, bringing healthcare directly to patients' homes.
Call the Car provides dependable, easy, and convenient non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT), non-medical transportation (NMT), and wrap-around services, ensuring no one is left behind in their journey to wellness.
