Hacking Generation Y is bringing together 400 top high school students to hack together solutions to global issues in a 30 hour hackathon that is dedicated to showcasing the brilliance of young entrepreneurs. The event had over 1000 applicants from ten countries and is supported by 32 sponsors, including Google, MIT Launch, and Tango. Speakers and
judges will be coming from Google, Tango, Facebook, Intel, Yahoo and other companies. The event will also host students from East Palo Alto for special workshops, to encourage them to enter the tech scene. HackGenY is set to take place between January 24-25, 2015 in the heart of Silicon Valley at the coworking space, NestGSV (www.nestgsv.com). The event is organized in collaboration with Hacker Fund (http://www.hacker.fund) & StudentRND (www.studentrnd.org) with the mission of creating an ecosystem in which current college hackers who wish they “had hackathons when they were in high school” can give back to their community by teaching high school students to empower themselves with technical knowledge. While hackathons are still in their infancy in the high school demographics, they have been growing exponentially among community colleges and universities and so Hacker Fund has rallied 50 of the top collegiate hackers in California to head to Silicon Valley and mentor the first high school hackathon of 2015.
