You can do so much more with Google Alerts, especially for marketing purposes. It lets you find leads, and monitor your competitors. Most importantly, it is a real-time source of the sites Google thinks are most authoritative. People place too much emphasis on PageRank, but that is a statement of the ranking of a site overall. Since Google Alerts are a selective sample for any keywords, they are Google's way of telling you what it finds most relevant at that moment for those keywords. The key is knowing all the syntax tricks that Google has built into Google Alerts. Only a few of them are listed on the Advanced Search page, but a good tutorial, like this one, will give you the tools you need to monitor Google at all times: http://www.alertrank.com/google-alerts-tutorial.html
