Gbanga is an award-winning location-aware massive multiplayer mobile game (LMMOG), often described as an alternative reality game (ARG), a trans-reality game (TRG) or mixed-reality entertainment. It is developed by Millform.
By visiting any real-world location with their mobile phone, players accordingly move within Gbanga’s virtual world. They play, connect and share items and information on the move.
Gbanga is located in Zurich, Switzerland and was founded by Matthias, Julio and Werner. Since the initial idea in April 2007 the Gbanga grew up to 9 people.
Pioneering showcase: Gbanga Zooh (2009)
In summer 2009, a successful pilot called Gbanga Zooh was performed where endangered animals (virtual) were spread across the city (physical locations) and the task was that they had to be saved and brought back to the zoological garden (in real).
Scaling game: Gbanga Famiglia (2010)
In April 2010, Gbanga Famiglia, a mixed-reality mafia game has been launched where participants must take-over as many real-world bars to become the virtual Mafioso. Inviting friends increases the influence and chance to succeed in take-overs.
Revenue model
Gbanga’s approach to location-based gaming is especially interesting because very high ARPUs and above-average retention have been reported.
Platform for location-based stories
Gbanga’s technology is applicable on an international basis and allows a new entertainment experience combined with unintrusive in-game advertizing. Patent pend. and brand reg.
Puppetmaster API
In 2011 at The Next Web conference, Gbanga also presented the Puppetmaster API that enables third-party developers to create and perform location-based quests and interactive stories on top of the Gbanga platform.
