Spencer Rascoff is the Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Zillow Inc. (NASDAQ: Z), the leading real estate information marketplace. Spencer joined the company as one of its founding employees in 2005 as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Marketing and served as its Chief Operating Officer from October 2008 through his promotion to CEO in September 2010. Under Spencer’s leadership, Zillow achieved record Web and mobile traffic, record revenue and record profitability in 2011, and successfully completed its IPO in July 2011. Zillow was also given the Game Changer of the Year 2011 Award from the King County REALTORs Association.
Spencer regularly appears on national broadcast television programs on CNBC, Bloomberg Television, and Fox News to discuss real estate data, housing trends and the Zillow business. Spencer is a recognized leader in the real estate industry and has received numerous awards including: Ernst & Young’s National Entrepreneur of the Year 2013 Services Award, Ernst & Young’s 2013 Pacific Northwest Entrepreneur of the Year in the business services category, Swanepoel’s Most Powerful People in Residential Real Estate in 2013, Inman News’ Most Influential Real Estate Leaders in 2012 and 2013, Inman News’ 2011 Innovator of the Year, Fortune’s 2012 40 Under 40 Hottest Young Stars in Business, Forbes’ America’s 20 Most Powerful CEOs 40 and Under in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2011 40 Under 40. In 1999, Spencer co-founded Hotwire.com, a leading Internet travel company, that was sold to Expedia in 2003. Spencer then became Vice President of Lodging for Expedia, where he ran Expedia’s largest and most profitable business line. During his five years in the travel industry, Spencer was a recognized industry leader and a frequent speaker at travel conventions. Spencer sat on the Board of Directors of the Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association (HEDNA) and was named one of the “25 Most Extraordinary Sales & Marketing Minds in Hospitality” by the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI).
Before his consumer Web career, Spencer was a private equity investor at TPG Capital, and an investment banker at Goldman Sachs, Bear Stearns and Allen & Company.
Spencer graduated cum laude from Harvard University, and he serves on Harvard University's Digital Community & Social Networking Advisory Group. Spencer is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), and the Policy Advisory Board at the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. Spencer also serves on the Boards of Directors of the following companies: TripAdvisor Inc., a publicly-traded travel services company; Julep, a privately-held beauty brand; and Zulily Inc., a publicly-traded consumer products company. Spencer speaks frequently to students and entrepreneurs at Harvard Business School, the Kellogg School of Management, the University of Washington and the Northwest Entrepreneur Network, and is also a mentor at TechStars Seattle, a leading venture incubator for startups.
