Mark Coker is a technology entrepreneur, angel investor and business advisor.

In 2008, founded Smashwords, Inc., an ebook self-publishing service.

In 1999, founded BestCalls.com, a directory of investor conference calls, where he advocated fair disclosure for small investors. The site was acquired by Shareholder.com in 2003, which itself was acquired by Nasdaq in 2005. Nasdaq continues to operate BestCalls.com.

In 1993, founded Dovetail Public Relations, a tech PR agency based in Los Gatos. He continues to own the agency though no longer manages day to day operations. Dovetail is Coker’s primary angel investing arm, where the firm provides marketing services in exchange for equity.

Through Dovetail, he has invested in just over a dozen mostly early stage startups since 1993, including: RightNow Technologies (IPOed), Quova (operating), Exploit Prevention Labs (acquired), IP Metrics (acquired), NeoScale (bankrupt), Shareholder.com (acquired), Terracheck (acquired), MovieStreet/FamilyWonder (acquired), GetQuik (operating), Flat World Knowledge (operating) and [Utopy] (operating).

Serves on the advisory boards of GetQuik and Flat World Knowledge.

Coker got his start in tech in 1987, when for three years he served as vp of marketing for his father’s garage startup, Coker Electronics, a developer of pre-Internet email systems.
