Dr. Jochen L. Leidner is one of the co-founders and currently a director at Linguit Ltd. From 03/2005 and 01/2008 he was also interim managing director of the company.
In addition, he has held positions as a Research Associate in the Department of Speech Signal Processing at Saarland University and as a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. In 2006, he was awarded a Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellowship in Electronic Markets for his work in mobile search.
Jochen holds a Ph.D. in Informatics (“Toponym Resolution in Text”, 2007), which won the first ACM SIGIR Doctoral Consortium Award for “outstanding technical contribution”, an M.Phil. in Computer Speech, Text and Internet Technology (CSTIT) from the University of Cambridge, and an M.A. in Computational Linguistics, English Language and Literature and Computer Science from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany (1998).
Besides his thesis research on the automatic geo-tagging and geo-referencing of place names in unstructured data and its evaluation, Jochen is best known for designing a series of successful question answering systems, including Alyssa (cf. U.S. NIST TREC 2007) and Nuggets (the first automatic SMS Q&A system).
Jochen has been developing software since 1984, and also held software engineering positions with SAP AG. He is also currently a Research Scientist at Thomson Reuters Corporation’s (NYSE: TRI) corporate Research & Development group.
