Jack Ma is the Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group.
Jack Ma now serves as Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, which is a holding company with nine major subsidiaries--Alibaba.com, Taobao Marketplace, Tmall, etao.com, Aliyun, Juhuasuan.com, 1688.com, AliExpress.com and Alipay. After the company’s debut in 1999, he served as Group chairman and chief executive officer for more than a decade, with responsibility for overall strategy and operation. On May 10, 2013, he stepped down as chief executive officer but remains executive chairman and continues to shape the Group’s business strategy and management development.
He currently serves on the board of SoftBank Corp, a leading digital information company that is publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. He is also a director of Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, a company listed on The Shenzhen Stock Exchange. In 2009, Jack became a trustee of The Nature Conservancy’s China program and joined the global board of directors of the organisation in 2010. Since May 11, 2013, he has served as chair of The Nature Conservancy’s China Board of Directors. From 1998 to 1999, Ma headed an information technology company established by the China International Electronic Commerce Center, a department of Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. In 1995, Ma founded China Yellowpages, widely believed to be China’s first Internet-based company. In 1991, Jack Ma founded Hangzhou Hope Translation Agency, the No.1 translation agency in Hangzhou.
As a respected business leader, Jack Ma was chosen by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as a “Young Global Leader” in 2001, and selected by China Central Television (CCTV) and its viewers as one of the “Top 10 Business Leaders of the Year” in 2004. He was also named one of the “25 Most Powerful Businesspeople in Asia” by Fortune in 2005, “Businessperson of the Year” by Business Week in 2007, one of the 30 “World’s Best CEOs” by US financial magazine Barron’s in 2008, and one of the World’s Most Influential People by Time in 2009. Jack Ma holds a Bachelor's degree in English from Hangzhou Normal University.
