Frank Bonsal III

Frank joined New Markets Venture Partners in 2007 and is a General Partner. He specializes in education and information technology investments. Frank serves as Board Director for Apangea Learning and Questar Assessment, and is a Board Observer for BetterLesson and Starfish Retention Solutions.

Prior to New Markets, Frank was a Partner at Bonsal Capital, a private equity firm founded by New Enterprise Associates (NEA) Co-Founder Frank Bonsal, Jr., and a Managing Partner of Education Capital, an education-centric boutique advisory firm. At Bonsal Capital, Frank worked in tandem with Bonsal Jr. in numerous direct and indirect investments in a multitude of sectors and managed the firm’s education investments including such successful investments as American Public Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: APEI), Blackboard, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBB), Capella Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPLA), Flat World Knowledge, Headsprout, Inc., Moodlerooms, Inc., Smarthinking, Inc. (acquired by Pearson) and SpectrumK12, Inc. (acquired by Scantron). Prior to Bonsal Capital, Frank was a K-12 practitioner with over 15 years experience in public and private settings, in the U.S. and abroad.

Frank serves on the Boards of Baltimore BORN, Garrison Forest School, Holderness School and Irvine Nature Center and is on the President’s Advisory Council of Stevenson University. He serves on a variety of grant and education industry-related panels and committees, most notably the National Science Foundation (NSF)and the Education Division of the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA). He also served as Alumni Board President and Member of the Campaign Steering Committee for Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.

Frank graduated with Honors from the University of New Hampshire where he majored in English Teaching and received Master of Education and Master of Business Administration degrees from Vanderbilt University. He is married with three children.
