He serves on the boards of Avalara, Loyalty Builders, Preventice, and Arthur Companies Inc., a diversified agribusinesses that was started by his grandfather 107 years ago and is headquartered in his hometown of Arthur, N.D. Previously a board member and investor of SuccessFactors, a cloud- based leader in business execution software, Doug served as chairman of the board from June 2010 to February 2012 when SAP acquired the company for $3.4 billion. Doug is founder and chairman of Kilbourne Group, a company committed to inspiring and supporting the revitalization of downtown Fargo, North Dakota. Kilbourne Group has helped save, revitalize and build 15 properties in downtown Fargo over the last 14 years.
A graduate of NDSU who earned his MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, Doug worked at the Chicago office of McKinsey & Co. until 1983. He then returned to his native North Dakota and literally “bet the farm” for the seed capital for Great Plains Software, Inc., then a very small startup company in the fledgling PC software industry. He served Great Plains in executive roles including chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors.
Driven by a strong vision and powerful dream, he led Great Plains to a worldwide presence and to its successful initial public offering.In 2009, then-North Dakota Governor John Hoeven presented Doug with the state’s highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award.
