By 22, Ennis had sold his first company and was serving as a consultant for internet portal Excite when the opportunity to institute a core component of Ennis’ first enterprise application, bar code scanning, into the new medium of online ticket sales.

From 1998 to 2002, Ennis worked with a number of high profile companies including Excite, Comcast and Dell. In 2002, Ennis joined Nashville non-profit Foundations Associates and proceeded to build several web products for the organization including a data management application, Housing Within Reach - A state funded website helping individuals with mental illnesses find housing, and SoberCircle. Ennis helped found SoberCircle in October 2006. The project opened the door for Ennis to use his extensive user experience background with the exciting new medium of online social networking. Ennis is often referred to as “The Tom of SoberCircle”, due to his status as the customer service face of the website.

In 2009 SoberCircle was acquired by San Diego based OneRecovery, a social network similar to SoberCircle. Ennis immediately joined OneRecovery as Director of Product Development. Ennis helped reorganize the company’s technology team and led the team to a successful pilot and eventual funding in July 2010. Ennis departed OneRecovery in December 2010 to join Simple Energy.

Most recently, Ennis was the VP of Technology & Product Development for Simple Energy, a Boulder, Colorado based startup that meshes utilities’ customers smart meter data with a social gaming experience where points and awards are given based on setting and achieving goals associated with their energy consumption.

Ennis is also a founding member of DotRage, a collaboration of developers to make a better web. He is also a partner at Function Interactive, where he has helped develop the web services of GetRhythm and RingRingBaby. Ennis has also served as a consultant for several projects including Doc Check and Kaala. Ennis is also known in his native Nashville, Tennessee for starting one of the first localized Twitter aggregators, NashMash.com.
