Bob’s career was primarily in semiconductors in Silicon Valley where he had the opportunity to manage three successive advanced technology high growth businesses from early stage through IPOs and subsequent strategic mergers with Fortune 500 companies. These “gazelle” companies were principally a result of commercializing and marketing the innovative advances from the companies’ R&D laboratories. During the ‘cold war’ he served as an appointed consultant to the U.S. Department of Defense on advanced technologies. Concurrently, he became active in specialized venture capital investments and subsequently became a principal in an investment banking firm specializing in strategic mergers.
Upon moving to Lake Tahoe in 1997 he lead the founding of the Sierra Angels to be the premier source of mentoring, venture capital and connectivity for early stage technology companies in the region and upon the subsequent formation of the Angel Capital Association, Sierra Angels was a founding member. Bob also made a commitment to devote time and energy to his post-career passion: the confluence of education, innovation and entrepreneurship, applying his strong advocacy for collaboration among complementary organizations to help accelerate innovation commercialization progress throughout the State and region. The Sierra Angels has been featured nationally in articles in Business Week Small Business, Worth (Robb Report) and numerous regional publications. In 2002 Bob was inducted into Nevada’s High Tech Hall of Fame, and in 2005 was honored by the Angel Capital Association as the first recipient of the Hans Severiens Award for leadership. In 2008, Santa Clara University honored Bob with their Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Founders’ Award. Bob was recently awarded a Honorary Doctorate in entrepreneurship by Sierra Nevada College.
In addition to his active role as Chair of Sierra Angels, Bob serves on a number of boards in support of his collaborative and converging interests. These include Chair Emeritus of Golden Capital Network(a Nevada and California collaboration), Initial Chairman of Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology (NCET), Recent member of UC Davis External Research Advisory Board, a founding Board Member of Research Ventures, Inc., a joint venture between University of Nevada Reno (UNR) and Desert Research Institute (DRI) to promote commercialization of their technology, Trustee of DRI Foundation, former Trustee of Sierra Nevada College, former Chair of UNR Engineering Advisory Board, former member of Santa Clara College Business Advisory Board, and President Emeritus of Nevada Technology Council He is co-founder and Vice Chair of Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy (NIREC) a highly active public-private nonprofit partnership whose mission is to transform laboratory science into successful business enterprises to accelerate technology-based economic diversification and job creation in the region. In 2010 he was appointed to Angel Resource Institute Board of Trustees.
