Web of Trust (WOT) is a community-powered browser add-on that helps web users find reliable websites. WOT uses an intuitive traffic-light rating system to help web users stay safe when they search, surf and shop online. Website ratings are crowd-sourced from a fast growing worldwide community of WOT users who have rated the reputation of tens of millions of websites based on their experiences in terms of trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety. Community ratings are augmented with information from selected technical data services. WOT ratings are shown on Google, Yahoo, Gmail, Wikipedia, Digg, delicious, and other popular sites. The add-on works with Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Safari browsers.
WOT (mywot.com) was founded in Finland in 2006 by Timo Ala-Kleemola and Sami Tolvanen. The company behind WOT is WOT Services Ltd., a start-up company with investment from sources such as MySQL creator Michael Widenius's investment company Open Ocean, the Finnish Industry Investment Ltd., and private investors.
