Xoom

Xoom is an international money transfer service that allows users to transer funds from its website to others who are off line and in other countries. The services is a viable alternative to PayPal when you hit some of PayPal’s limitations such as overseas transfers.

Xoom transactions do not require bank accounts on either side. Also, Xoom allows your to transfer your PayPal funds where PayPal itself can’t. Fees range from around 4% for small transactions to 1.1% for large ones. It’s a reasonable rate compared to others, but nothing to brag about.

Xoom has currently raised a generous $50+ million in 5 rounds of venture capital. Appropriately, Sequoia Capital’s Roelof Botha is a lead investor in Xoom and a member of the board. Botha served as the CFO of PayPal before he moved to Sequoia and has made investments in this space before.

Xoom.com provides the WORST ever service to transfer money internationally. Their slogan "SEND MONEY IN MINUTES" is false. It has taken more than 12 days for them to validate my checking bank account before funds are available to my recipient, but obviously, they didn't take too long -less than 12 hours- to debit my account after I provide them with all my bank account details. They kept my money (only a few hundreds) for almost 2 weeks. For a few hundreds, the interest shouldn't be too much during half a month, but I wonder how much money(millions) they keep at no interest from other people. I pay thousands, a HELL, in interests for money borrowed PER DAY, but these people are making profits at no cost. I would strongly discourage anyone to use Xoom. Better alternatives like WESTERN Union are out there. Think TWICE before you engage your money with them, at least until they advertise SEND MONEY IN WEEKS!
