Xiaomi Inc. is a privately owned company that designs, develops, and sells Internet services and consumer electronics. Xiaomi offers a suite of Internet services such as MiCloud, Xiaomi App Market, and Xiaomi Games Center. Its core line of hardware products includes the MI 2S, the MI 3, and MI Red smartphones, MITV and the MIBox digital media receiver (all of which are available for sale in greater China).
All of Xiaomi’s hardware products are sold exclusively via the company’s website and (where applicable) come stocked with Xiaomi’s Android-based MIUI ROM.
Xiaomi continues to develop and tweak Andriod’s functionality and UI with the fervent support of its fanbase. Every Friday Xiaomi releases an updated build of its MIUI ROM. Forum members can submit feedback and develop content (i.e. themes, wallpapers, ringtones), which is then incorporated into the next build.
In 2010, Lei Jun (founder and CEO of Kingsoft) and Lin Bin (a former engineer at Google and Microsoft) co-founded Xiaomi with five other partners. In August 2011, the company introduced its first smartphone, which was a breakout hit in mainland China. According to active device volume data from Antutu, sales of the MI2 outpaced those of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 in the first half of 2013.
