Vanguard Health Systems Inc., a healthcare company, engages in the ownership and operation of acute care hospitals, outpatient facilities, and related health plans primarily in urban and suburban markets in the United States. Its hospitals offer a range of services, including internal medicine, general surgery, cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, obstetrics, diagnostic, and emergency services, as well as select tertiary services, such as open-heart surgery, and level II and III neonatal intensive care services. The companyâ€™s hospitals also provide outpatient and ancillary healthcare services, such as outpatient surgery, laboratory, radiology, respiratory therapy, and physical therapy; and rehabilitation, nursing, and psychiatric services. In addition, it offers outpatient services at its imaging centers and ambulatory surgery centers. As of June 30, 2009, the company owned and managed 15 acute care hospitals with 4,135 licensed beds and related outpatient service locations in San Antonio, Texas; metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona; metropolitan Chicago, Illinois; and Massachusetts, as well as managed health plans in Chicago and Phoenix, and 2 surgery centers in Orange County, California. It also owned three managed care health plans: Phoenix Health Plan, a Medicaid managed health plan that served approximately 176,200 members in Arizona; Abrazo Advantage Health Plan, a managed Medicare and dual-eligible health plan that served 2,800 members; and MacNeal Health Providers, a preferred provider network that served 39,700 member lives in metropolitan Chicago under capitated contracts covering outpatient and physician services. The company was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.
