United Mobile

United Mobile allows travelers to use their cell phones and make calls at low prices (without roaming fees) while traveling abroad. The company operates a global cell network and sells United Mobile SIM cards that enable a user’s cell phone to make calls on United Mobile’s network. As a low-cost calling option for international travelers, United Mobile offers an alternative to Skype.

UM's data service shutdown was the first indication of things going south. It was a good service while it lasted. I just picked up a data plan at http://www.iroam.com Also, I went with their Blackberry SIM, which is a T-Mobile SIM. It is very reliable. I only use it for voice, but you can enable BB roaming on it.

OMG I cant believe I uploaded so much funds to my card and now i cant make a call , i cant even call the help line ....is it legal to even go out of business without sending an email to their client list? this is not nice

I was able to get a good deal on a replacement SIM card from http://www.intouchsmartcards.com they look to have a few global SIMs that have not been affected by United Mobile's problems.

Another discussion about United Mobile out of business is going on in this forum: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/945031-anybody-having-trouble-their-united-mobile-sim.html

My United Mobile number is dead too, account unavailable... Does anyone know where people are discussing this apart from here? I can't find any news about this, no official announcements, no user feedback with further info. Any Site/Forum you know where people are discussing this?
Techconsult - April 19, 2009 at 9:34am
It looks like it's a financial issue since both their +423 and +44 numbers are not working. Coupled with the fact that they have chosen not to communicate with their customers. As for credit refund, it's very unlikely that we will get any if they are actually bankrupt.

It is unbelievable and very strange the problem started since end of march, when making a call for les than a minute they where charging 23,59 euros, we send them many request, they say that is technical problem, now no body answerig i customer services and the site cannot be access, did anyone have any news what going to happened and what about the credit we have in our accounts.

The card does not connect to any network here either. No way to reach customer service. I have another roaming SIM (sim4travel) which is another Jersey Telecom card, and that works perfectly.
Yep they broke - April 17, 2009 at 2:07pm
I got a Uk and Li no. from UM. Both are not working. Since a few days some companys broke up their relation ships with UM. And now theire homepage is down and u can´t access your account anymore. If they not broke, why should they stop any contact with their costumers? The word of mouth can be a deadly weapon. Instead of informing and keeping their costumers up to date they obviously not interested to stay in business!

Just heard that United Mobile has gone out of business. Their assets have been frozen awaiting liquidation, there is no way the service will restart.
Andrea - April 17, 2009 at 2:29am
United Mobile is currently out of business (but not in bankrupted yet). I have made some further investigations and I have been told that nobody can say if and when the service will restart. In any case it is unlikely that this can happen in the next few weeks. There are thousand of people who trust on United Mobile SIM cards to travel around the world. Now they are unreachable and unable to call due to the irresponsible behaviour of this company. Still the management of United Mobile has not sent any communications to their clients; the customer service is still unreachable.
Guido P. - April 16, 2009 at 10:35am
United Mobile has indeed severe problems. I completely agree with previous comments. The UK (+44) number is unable to connect to any network. Likewise, I tried to contact their Customer Service, albeit with no success. Incredibly irresponsible and above all, very damaging for their business and ours too. There are no excuses for not sending a courtesy email explaining what is going on. In fact, this has been happenning last 48 hours and with +423 number even longer, because no outgoing phone calls are possible!!!
Andrea - April 16, 2009 at 5:04am
There are big problems with United Mobile. Today the SIM card does not connect to any network. It is impossible to speak with the Customer Service. Apparentely there is a legal problem with the platform of Mobilkom that is off. United Mobile could inform their customers about these problems by email and with warnings of their website but they don't.
United Mobile - April 9, 2009 at 12:56pm
United Mobile is still in the business, if you have a problem with your SIM please contact the helpline.
Andreu Pacheco - April 7, 2009 at 3:32pm
I think this company is down. I cannot make new calls since two weeks and the customer support is unavailable.
Penny Maclean - March 11, 2009 at 10:04am
I agree with this. Put £20 on in January and this was never added to my account. No response to emails and phone not answered.
mikemis - March 1, 2009 at 12:59pm
I am customer of United Mobile and suddenly I can't get any service - my cell phone continually searches for a network to register on. Their web site is also down. I think they've gone belly up - with no warning to customers. Dump this company!
