Tupalo is local social networking utility, which hosts a worldwide database of entertainment-focused local businesses. Visitors are capable of searching or browsing listings of particular interest based on geographic locations in order to find reviews, photos and ratings. Star ratings are based on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the worst, 5 being the best. Each business listing contains wiki-like editable details, such as address, phone number and website.
Content available on Tupalo is available for visitors and members via a city-based organizational structure which divides content into tags, or keywords. Registered users are able to collect friends, locations, create custom sets consisting of local businesses in an ordered list structure. In addition, registered users are able to participate in and create discussions groups, which feature a fully-featured discussion groups, member lists and collaborative group sets, allowing group members to collect group-relevant local businesses. Information is accessible via web and mobile browsers, with an iPhone client currently under development.
The founders of Tupalo previously were developers for Rockstar Games in Vienna, Austria and were privately funded up until Summer of 2007. In Summer 2007, Tupalo was awarded funding in the amount of 77,050 EURO (±$120,000) for further development of the Tupalo concept by the Departure Fund, a lifestyle, cultural and technological public fund offered by the City of Vienna.
Tupalo reaches lifestyle and mainstream markets via brand and product partnerships, street-level guerrilla marketing and by hosting local parties in conjunction with partners such as Vice Magazine Austria, Absolut Vodka Austria, A1 / Mobilkom, The Gap Magazine, MAKAvA Tea, and Bionade Austria.
