Soundflavor (formerly Siren Systems) is a web-based platform of search, discovery, and recommendation services for music. Initially the company focused exclusively on selling their services to commercial entities, but they’ve since broadened their market to go after consumers as well.
Soundflavor looks at itself as “IMDB on Steroids for Music.” Since 2002 the company has been tagging songs and lyrics with a large variety of attributes (mood, subject, genre, style, instrument, vocal style). These pre-selected tags help users of the service discover new music.
Every song and artist details page has a list of flavors (a sound based tag cloud) so users can see how tracks have been tagged and can click on these tags (banjo, 70s, clean guitar, breakup lyrics, whatever) to find other songs with that quality.
As you listen to music (or watch videos) the service creates a personal tag cloud that represents your musical tastes.
The site also provides the ability to create video playlists based on any song, artist or mix of attributes. You can make these playlists manually (adding tracks as you explore the site), automatically via a one-click playlist button, by saving a page of songs on our flavor filter pages, or by uploading a playlist you’ve made in iTunes which will then be converted into a video playlist.
Soundflavor’s Video Jukebox widget allows users to embed video playlists on their personal sites. Visitors can watch music videos of songs on your playlist or request their own.
