SmartHippo

SmartHippo allows individuals to use the power of a community to save money when shopping for rates on financial products and services.

Members of SmartHippo can see real rates reported by real consumers, and sort through banks based on feedback posted by other members of the community. SmartHippo.com allows any individual to post information and feedback on the rate they received, and to compare rates with other members of the community with similar profiles.

The site launched in open beta at the TechCrunch40 conference on September 17, 2007.

Interesting concept. I like what they're doing and wish I would have had a site like this to help me when I refinanced last year.

What a great idea! Finnaly someone wants to put power in people's hands. Site design is ok but rather rough around the edges. They clearly didn't put any effort into usability, and even less into using some basic marketing principles on their site (hello, any marketer there?). An obvious challenge will be having people posting rates (to use their term) on the site, but there's enough mortgage rates out there they could post some. It's pretty terrible to launch and only have rates from 1 bank in results (7 from the same one!!!). Come on! As a final note, a site like this needs to have an obvious viral factor. Refering friends is simple, easy to do and free, why not have this possibility? No idea. 10 for the idea and concept, 3 for execution on the idea, 3 for user focus, and a 1 out of 10 for survivibility if they don't fix little simple things quick. Time is short, possibilities are endless. Good luck!
