pixiv is a Japanese illustrators’ online community with a focus on simplicity. It was first launched on September 10, 2007. As of October 2009, the site consists of over 1.3 million members, over 6 million submissions, and receives over 15,000 submissions per day. pixiv is ranked as No.68 in Japanese popular website by Alexa’s web traffic analysis. It has also access from overseas, which consists 7% of total page views.
pixiv aims to provide a place for artists to exhibit their illustrations and get feedback via a rating system and user comments. Works are organized in an extensive tag structure which forms the backbone of the website.
“Image Response” is a unique culture on pixiv, encouraging interactions between users. This makes pixiv a place of co-creation, where users can collaborate with each other and create new pieces of art.
There are many community projects on pixiv. Some are official illustration contests held by game and animation makers, and some are hosted by users.
pixiv also organize an exhibition called “pixiv festa” and a user-oriented marketplace for fan publications called “pixiv market” in attempting to “make a more enjoyable place for illustrators”.
These user activities in our community can easily reach beyond language and cultual barriers, attracting more and more Japanese illustration fans from overseas.

“Rating system” On pixiv, illustrations are rated on a scale of 1 to 10 by users, so you can get direct feedback on your works through this rating system. Daily rankings of illustrations are also calculated according to ratings, views, and bookmark count.
“Bookmarks” You can organize your favorite illustrations by bookmarking them and enjoy discovering new favorites by exploring bookmarks of other users.
“Tags” Tags help you easily find illustrations related to any specific categories or keywords.
“Image Response” pixiv offers a unique feature called “Image Response”. When you respond to an illustration with your own piece, a mutual link is generated between you and its author.
