Ooyala is a video technology company that provides industry-leading solutions for managing, distributing and monetizing high-quality video online. Founded by former Google engineers in April 2007, Ooyala takes a novel approach at delivering video, targeting ads and collecting video analytics. Since launching its flagship product, Backlot, in December of 2007, Ooyala has signed up over 1000 paying customers including Warner Brothers, AOL/Bebo, National Geographic, TV Guide and the Glam network.
The Mountain View, Calif. company, founded by ex-Google employees has claimed to have created a “new interaction and monetization platform for online and offline video,” and that it raised a large round of funding from the “typical folks in the valley and the not-so-typical guys in Hollywood.”
Ooyala’s main product is Backlot, a HD-capable video distribution, syndication, analytics and monetization platform. For its innovation and technology, Ooyala won an Amazon-sponsored start-up competition. They received a $50,000 in cash and $50,000 worth of Amazon Web Service credits.
Ooyala’s competitors include Brightcove, Move Networks, and Maven Networks.
