Bandwidth Detector
Launch DateJune 26, 2013

Visitors to mobile websites expect blazing fast performance, much as they get with native mobile apps, but the constraints of mobile make this a challenge to achieve consistently. Different devices have different CPU power, JavaScript support capabilities, browsers and memory, but chief among the variables impacting performance is bandwidth. Even the most powerful top-end device will be sluggish if a rich (read: big) web page is sent over a slow connection.

With the bandwidth detection parameter in Device Context Service, websites can instantly detect the speed of the connection of every connecting device and determine immediately what content to send. Fast connection and a high performing device? Send the best quality images and video content. Slow connection and / or lower-performing device? Strip out the video content and send low-resolution images, or perhaps no images at all.

By adjusting content based on the bandwidth of the customer’s connection, and combining with other parameters related to performance, web developers can ensure that regardless of bandwidth constraints, visitors will still receive the fastest possible experience.

Device Context Service

Today’s web browsing customers are using a huge range of devices to get online. With consumers realizing the value of the device in their pocket for brief frequent visits, instead of long online sessions, there is a game-changing shift in their behavior that brands need to understand, and react to as never before.

Brands need to have at their disposal a complete customer picture to inform their mobile marketing strategy. The need to offer adaptive web services is greater than ever. Delivering tailored device experiences means you need to understand and utilize device features and functions, such as touch and gesture control, and user information such as location and connection bandwidth. Without access to this information, and the ability to act upon it, websites will deliver poor functionality, increased load times and ultimately miss the opportunity to achieve that rich, engaging experience that consumers expect today.

The Netbiscuits Device Context Service is a cloud-based device detection solution and intelligence service that answers those questions. It combines device and server-side information to provide the most accurate and detailed profile of the connecting device; enabling more targeted content and the best possible mobile experience on any device.
