Multiply

Multiply is a social site built around digital content sharing. Users get their own pages where they can add all their favorite personal digital content like videos, music, calendars and blogs. They are encouraged to invite their contact lists from other sites like Yahoo, Myspace, Hotmail and Bebo. Once you have built up a network by inviting friends and family and you can start picking and choosing how your digital content is shared with the network.

The site has news feeds just like Facebook so when new digital content is added to your network everyone is alerted. Multiply lets users set permissions on their digital content so they can control what is shared with their network. Also, they allow users to set filters for what they receive in their news feeds from other people in their network. For instance, uses can decide to view only grandma’s photo content. And, they can set permissions so grandma can only view their blog entry content.

Multiply as of August 2007 has over 6 million users and over 400 million page views. Competitors include social networks like Facebook and MySpace.

"The site has news feeds just like Facebook so when new digital content is added to your network everyone is alerted." I think it's awkward to compare Multiply's message page (news feed) to Facebook's. For one thing, it implies that Multiply added the feed system after Facebook. However, I've been using Multiply since 2004 and they've had it at least that long. Facebook added their news feed in 2006. It's also an awkward comparison because Facebook's news feed is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich compared to Multiply's, which is more akin to a hearty and complex gumbo. Multiply's system is far more flexible and gives more information in a neatly organized manner. Michael Arrington wrote in his post on FriendFeed, that "the year old Facebook News Feed idea,... may be the single most important feature contributing to the success of Facebook Platform." That's exactly what I've been saying about Multiply since the day I joined. And on Multiply, the message page (news feed) is only one of many extremely well thought out and implemented features. Their privacy controls are the best I've seen anywhere, viewing histories come as a standard feature for all posts and for home pages, and their concept of a "network," as opposed to only "contacts," means you can get to know other people in a more natural way than is possible on most social sites. To top it all off, their customer service is fantastic and they've created a group specifically for users and developers to discuss ways to improve the site. You definitely get a sense that they're not just trying to make the next online smash sensation. They're trying to build a product carefully and thoughtfully with attention to detail and consideration for users.
