Mozy

Mozy is an online storage product from Berkeley Data Systems, founded in 2005. Berkeley Data Systems, located in American Fork, Utah, is venture funded by Wasatch Partners, Tim Draper, and Drew Major.

Mozy’s backup service is split into two tiers, Mozy Home and Pro. Both are downloaded applications that upload selected files to Mozy’s servers for archiving. Mozy Home is designed for individual users and provides unlimited backup of your data for $4.95/month. Mozy Pro is designed for the enterprise, including a management layer and database backups on top of Mozy Home’s features.

In April 2007, Mozy landed a multi-million dollar deal with GE to supply Mozy Pro for their enterprise. The company was recently acquired for $76 million by EMC corporation.

On the consumer side, Mozy competes with Carbonite and others. At the enterprise level, Iron Mountain and EVault are the entrenched competitors.

I have been using Mozy to backup my personal files and data since Aug 2007 and have been very pleased with the service. Helped me get backup and running after a HD crash and the tech support helped when I had a small problem with the software. Highly recommend Mozy for a home backup solution.

Mozy is great. Backups are easy and fairly quick. You can configure pretty much any file or folder on your HD. I'm just wondering if I can backup my Windows data onto a MAC.. My Windows machine keeps crashing and I'm really thinking of going with a MAC instead.

I've tried both Carbonite and Mozy... Carbonite is great as a simple to configure backup tool and comes with pretty much the same price as Mozy however, due to the software being too simple and doesn't provide much advanced settings, I decided to go for Mozy... Mozy on the other hand comes with a 'lite' version where users are given 2GB of backup for FREE! If you need more, at 4.95 / month, you get unlimited storage. The software allows advance configuration... the web based interface for restoring backed up files is also commendable. I'd go Mozy all the way... :)

They took my money. Couldn't even access their site let alone configure. How reliable is that?

I've used Mozy for more than 9 month now on my Windows PC and 3 month on my Mac laptop and am very happy with Mozy this far. I never had to restore my backups though. I do also write a blog on Mozy which you can find here: http://www.mozybackup.net . Hope that helps.
