Motech was founded in 1981 as a designer and manufacturer of test and measurement instruments. The company entered into solar cell production in 1999, and eventually into the manufacturing and marketing of mono and multi-crystalline silicon solar cells in Taiwan.
In December 2009, TSMC purchased a 20% stake in Motech, for a sum of approximately $193 million.
