meebo

Mountain View-based Meebo is a Sequoia-backed, web-based instant messaging company. Meebo originally gave users the ability to access multiple chat clients from one place without the need for desktop software. This was great for users when they were away from their main computer and without AOL, ICQ, MSN or Yahoo software. However, in less than two years Meebo has launched so many new features that for many people it’s changed from an occasional solution to a frequently used web app.

Meebo has become quite popular, with users exchanging over 80 million instant messages daily. In addition, Meebo has been named to the following lists:

  • Time’s Top 50 Coolest Websites for 2006
  • PC World’s The 100 Best Products of 2006
  • PC World’s The 100 Best Products of 2007
  • Top 100 Webware sites for 2007
  • PC World’s The 100 Best Products of 2008

Meebo has grown from a simple website to an IM platform. Their main product is of course Meebo.com. When you first get to the site you can easily login to one or all of the following IM services: AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, ICQ and Jabber. Users are also given the option to login with their Meebo account. With a Meebo account users have access to all of their instant messaging accounts with a single sign-on, and all contacts across all networks can be seen in a single list.

Once logged-in, Meebo almost feels like a desktop client due to its use of Ajax. You can drag and drop the message boxes around the screen. And the core functionality (making IM more useful and easy to use) is quite nice.

Meebo Rooms is Meebo’s version of the chat room. It has some nice features including the ability to be embedded into a website and if anyone adds a link to media, say a YouTube video, the video is automatically embedded into the chat for users to view/hear. Meebo has partnered with a number of companies to offer branded Meebo Rooms. For example, there is a “Flixster’s Top Trailers” room where users can watch the top trailers from Flixster and chat about them at the same time.

Meebo users also have access to Meebo Me, an embeddable widget which puts an IM window onto any personal webpage. It lets you chat with your site visitors in real-time from Meebo.com.

Meebo has also worked on a few side projects. Go Meebo! encourages the community to spread the word about their beloved Meebo, Meebo Map shows approximately where IMs have been sent or received through Meebo in the past 15 minutes, and Meebo Repeater helps people access Meebo safely where access is restricted.

meebo also uses embed chats that you can place at various website you have or blogs and a meebo repeater that allows you to use meebo even on restricted places like your school, they really do know what their doing and what their community wants

Great application - it was the only way I could continue to use AIM while working at my former company that had serious firewalls. Helping to make the internet easier - thank you!
