Kik was founded in 2009, when a small but incredibly passionate group of University of Waterloo students decided to build a company that would shift the center of computing from the PC to the phone.
Based in Waterloo, Ontario the company now has about 30 employees working on Kik Messenger, the simplest, fastest, most life-like chat experience on a smartphone.
In November 2012 the company introduced Kik Cards, mini-apps built in HTML5 that let users search for and send YouTube videos, find and share images, Reddit pics and GIFs, and create sketches and memes - without leaving Kik and or having to download a separate app.
Kik Cards is also a powerful gaming platform, with Kik’s first game Squared reaching over 1M installs in just over a month.
Kik is backed by major VCs and has raised $29.1M to date. Its VCs are the same firms that first helped Twitter, Foursquare, Zynga and others become household names.
Today Kik has over 50M users and adds 200,000 new users a day.
