Jaman is a service that allows users to discover, watch and share independent and world films online. Films can either be purchased or rented for 7 days and are viewable through the Jaman Player.
The service was founded by Gaurav Dhillon who previously founded Informatica Corporation (NASDAQ: INFA).
Jaman has a lot of competition in the movie downloading market, but most competitors focus on Hollywood movies. Competitors include MovieLink, Vongo, CinemaNow and iTunes.

When you go to Jaman.com you’re greeted with the message, “Nuke up the popcorn - your ultimate movie experience is about to begin.” Ultimate might not be the right word – Jaman only has independent and world films (there are no Hollywood films to be found). Otherwise the statement is pretty accurate.
Despite omitting Hollywood films, Jaman still offers plenty to choose from. Founder Gaurav Dhillion says only 1% of films on this planet get theatrical distribution in the US. Jaman is trying to make many other great films available all around the world.
Some people may not be convinced that these films are worth watching, but Jaman is. They give users 3 free rentals just for signing up. Rentals are available for 7 days and normally cost $1.99. You can watch them as often as you want in that time. Films can also be purchased for $4.99.
Movies are downloaded and watched through the Jaman Player (a P2P client), available on both the Mac and Windows operating systems. The quality of films is above DVD quality and movies take up about 1GB of space per hour in length.
The community is a big part of Jaman. Users can comment on films in realtime, write reviews, participate in groups and discussions and more. In addition to finding movies by genre, users can search lists of movies including most downloaded, top rated, most favorited and most discussed. This is very helpful since most film titles on the service aren’t recognizable by most.
In October of 2007 Jaman introduced it’s Movie Finder, which is an yet another way for users to find movies they might like. Using the Movie Finder, users adjust four different preferences, from serious to funny, mellow to charged, deep to shallow and tears to bullets. The Movie Finder then recommends films matching your tastes and shows you members who have similar tastes.
The company has also launched a plug-in that gives Apple TV users access to their Jaman library.
