IntenseDebate

Intense Debate is a blog commenting system that supports Typepad, Blogger and Wordpress blogs. The system allows blog owners to track and moderate comments from one place with features like threading, comment analytics, user reputation and comment aggregation.

Intense Debate offers blog readers a powerful networking system to establish reputations, link their profiles, make friends and syndicate their comments. It will create a “mini-blogging platform” that will hold commenters responsible for their comments across various blogs. I’m sure the service will help jumpstart a couple superstar commenter careers.

The company is currently in private beta mode. It is also an incubating startup for TechStars. Competitors include CoComment, JS-Kit, SezWho and Tangler.

I would recommend not installing IntenseDebate. I installed it on my blog, had problems with unrelated comments from other blogs and tried to uninstall ID. Now no one can comment on my blog and technical support at IntenseDebate has been neither technical nor supportive. Two thumbs down!

Just that traffic increase alone should be enough to help bolster the system's popularity and therefore the number of sites that support it.

We have been using ID since the end of July, and it has been great so far. There have been a few bugs, but that was expected with a beta system. We recently converted the entire blog over to use the Intense Debate system. We currently have over 1000 comments loaded through the ID system. They are also rolling out new features. On another note, from Sept 06 to July 07 we had about ~40 comments/month. From July 07 to Oct 07 we averaged ~110 comments/month. Very good improvement since we implemented the Intense Debate comment system.

I can see where a website like techcrunch could use something like this. Although Multiply's reply system is still the best I've seen anywhere, Intense Debate's is a close runner up and certainly better than the weak to pitiful reply systems I see on most websites.
