IMVU

IMVU is not a virtual world. It is a 3D IM client with 1 million beta users as of the summer of 2007. IMVU offers users a customizable 3D avatar and chat service through a downloadable application. Avatars have a variety of clothes, accessories and scenes and although each scene looks like part of a full virtual world, actual movement is limited. Unlike more robust avatar based programs like Second Life, IMVU has an understandably younger user base. Avatars generally appear to be in their teens, yet often have very revealing clothes. In the near future, IMVU plans to add games and branded accessories and characters to the program. Users will be able to be their favorite movie stars and dress in clothes they wear in real life. This potentially opens IMVU up to clothing and accessory advertisers as well as game developers.

Currently IMVU earns revenue through ads and avatar upgrades. You can find a sample video of IMVU here and information about other virtual applications here and here.

Response to Jess: If you are referring to changing your Background image then what you need to do is go to your Home Page and right at the top on the right handside of your HP, you will see the options EDIT,SAFE, HELP,PREVIEW.Click on EDIT and it will give you a drop down box that says PAGE BACKGROUND or FIND LOST STICKERS.Click on PAGE BACKGROUND.When the box appears you can change the color of your BG or place a URL in the area where it states that.Click save when you are done. To get a picture, try going to photobucket and grabbing the URL or Dirent Link of a picture you would like to add and place it in the space provided on your IMVU Page Background options. If you need any more help, then just PM me on my HomePage. My name on IMVU is Angelique23.

To Parents: IMVU is a chat site and like many chat sites, there will be vulgar words and alot of sexual innuendo's from alot of strange people out there.IMVU is intended for people to chat and get to know each other. If people are acting inappropriate, then like the Real world ,PARENTS are the ones that need to monitor their children, just like you do on a day to day basis outside of the computer. Myself personally think that if you want your children off the site then the best way to do that is to monitor your child's activities on the computer. It's easy to do.Go to user accounts and limit your childs comp. Make yourself the Admin and password it.Then you can be the only one to download anything on your childs computer.Since children cannot see Access Pass Items or AP Home Pages,it will weed out alot of the sexual explicit things. They still can access the Home Pages on IMVU and not the chat. That to can be monitored by a PARENT. All it takes is guidance from you as the PARENT! If your child does have an IMVU account, you can also monitor that as well. Make your child aware that you will be adding the password to the account and that only when you allow them to go on they will have to have your permission. Alot of things can be done to cut down on alot of inappropriate things that happen on website. Be wiser then your children and a responsible one. This is just my opinion.

PEER REVIEW!!! is the worst thing imvu ever came up with
BroCharly - June 4, 2008 at 6:59pm
peer review? HA! what a joke. If your a dev and you DON'T participate in peer review, submit a product and see how long it takes before it gets reviewed and entered into the catalog. Yet you receive no renumeration for doing the work that IMVU staff should be doing, weather it's virtual renumeration, being able to keep your adult purchases (AP holders) etc.

Am i understanding right that if you call them with a credit card you are "age verified"? If that is so, cant any kid use their parents, sisters, brothers, ext cards to say their 18?
hi - May 25, 2008 at 7:07am
hey why don't you guys, make imvu compatible with apple computer.
Ryan - May 23, 2008 at 4:12pm
Also, peer review is optional, those users who want to do it can. it was introduced to stop the grief flaggers who would flag everything in the catalog because they couldn't afford it

IMVU has its ups and downs. Like any other chat website there is the concern for pedophiles and stalkers. Parents should take extra care if they know that there child has an account on this website. Put on your private investigator outfit and search your child's chat logs and see what they have been saying. Be warned you will have to read carefully because it is full of numbers, when ever they put something on, take it off, add furniture, remove furniture, change rooms, etc, it will be listed in the log, even when they move their avatar or interact with another. Parents can feel a little safer because your children can not actually have "sex" on the website, there are sexual things in the chat and in the catalog but they are for users with the Access Pass. A user 18+ can get this pass to have some adult fun during there time there, but you must verify your age and name with your credit card in order to get one, because you also get "Age Verified" when you purchase an Access Pass. ~Ryan (Refuge on IMVU)

Enjoying the chat with many people from around the world. Reminds me of the excitement of the late 1980s when IM got popular for a while and then people pulled back and only chatted with friends mostly. Cool 3 D chat enjoying it. Good work. Mark from Colfax CA

I was very disturbed to find that my 11 year old daughter and her friend downloaded this program (without permission from us) and within a span of 20 minutes saw chat asking if avatars could "have sex". I was mortified to learn that they were chatting with a self-described 38 year old man. I was further disgusted to see in reviewing the chat logs that people said "fuck you" and "suck my dick." What a great website for kids.............
