Born out of Garageband.com, iLike is a social music discovery site. Valued at $53.2 million in December of 2006, iLike has been funded by the likes of former MTV CEO Bob Pittman and at the time of the valuation, by Ticketmaster (IAC) which took control of 25% of the company for $13.3 million.
According to iLike, it promotes music democracy by exposing artists that users have not heard of, but may like according to their listening habits. Similar to Last.fm, iLike catalogs what you listen to through iTunes (and now other players) with a downloadable application. What users listen to on itunes shows up in their iLike profile in categories defined by quantity and how recent a song has been played. In addition to displaying your own listening information, iLike tries to match you up with other iLike users who have similar tastes in music.
iLike has links to buy songs or albums from Amazon and iTunes, but also offers free downloads from many independent musicians.

Gcast is a secondary function of ilike. It is a podcast creator that, for free, helps you choose podcast safe songs, host your podcast and embed it in your blog or elsewhere. Embedded Gcast players let your website/blog readers listen to old podcasts as well as subscribe.

To engage in the full ilike experience, users must download the itunes sidebar which tracks all the music they listen to and then posts it on their profile. The more music you listen to, the better ilike can match you with people with similar tastes. Judging by a compatibility score, users will be led to other users’ profiles in order to find new songs that you might like. Click on any song to hear a sample and find a link to buy it on itunes or amazon. In addition to the recommendations users get from other users, ilike also recommends music from emerging artists in the Garageband index. These artists, who few or no ilike users listen to, often provide free downloads for ilike to offer to its userbase.

The wildly popular ilike facebook program is a three part application. 1.) It allows facebook users to recommend songs and artists to their friends. 2.) It finds concerts from your favorite artists. 3.) It has an addictive game whose objective is to name a sample song as fast as you can. Users who score highly have earned bragging rights amongst their friends.
