Hatena is a Japanese web services company with offices in Kyoto and Tokyo. The site of the same name is especially popular among Japan’s heavy web users. Hatena USA was established in Los Altos, California, in 2007.
In Japan, Hatena operates a number of different services, including Hatena Bookmark (Japan’s biggest social bookmarking service), Hatena Diary (a blogging platform), Hatena Question (a Q&A service) and Hatena Fotolife (a photo sharing service).
The American site is heavily scaled down in comparison and focuses on Hatena Haiku (a platform for short poems) and Flipnote, a drawing service supporting Nintendo’s handheld game system DS.
