Habbo

Popular mostly outside of the U.S., Habbo Hotel is a mostly free online virtual world which earned $30 million in revenue in 2006. The site is targeted towards a younger demographic ranging from 13 to 18 year olds (90% of users fall in this range). It is free to register and walk around the hotel, yet users can pay extra for more functionality, club membership and furnishings for their hotel room. Users join on to chat, play games, go virtual swimming and do anything else one might do in a real hotel. Since the hotel is mostly populated by youths, all chats are filtered and all rooms monitored. Users cannot give email address or phone numbers to others neither can they use offensive language or sexist terms.

To pay for services or items within Habbo Hotel’s miniverse, users need Habbo Coins. These are available for purchase by home phone or through a text message on your mobile phone. Habbo has plans to add a complete mobile miniverse, but currently has only added Habbo Home; a social network done Habbo Style.

Habbo has almost 80 million registered users and 7 million unique users per month. The average visit is 30 minutes while the average page impressions per month are 400 million. For a virtual world with less functionality than a Second Life, it is doing incredibly well, partly because of the great graphics which they call “pixelart”.

I've been a Habbo Hotel member for almost 3years now. To tell the truth Habbo Hotel is mostly for the younger generation, even though you have to be 13 to sign up. In my opinion Habbo Hotel isn't user friendly, though they created a system where users can help new users out. Still people can be people, abusing noobs. Other than that you can earn badges by participating in events, which you usually can know when their out by the news on the side of the homepage. You can go into guest rooms, which are created by other users who've bought or won furniture for rooms they've built. (P.S. Its VERY easy to make a room, so no worries on that). Habbo Club, also known as HC, is where you can pay for a membership (through coins which are money in Habbo Hotel) you get access to more rooms you can build, rooms you can enter on the Public Rooms, clothes, and colors for your clothing. You can usually buy Habbo coins through credit cards, the phone, or Habbo Cards which are in retailers. You can chat easily, also you can "shout" which makes your typing bolder when sent, "say" which is normal font, or "whisper" which you have to click on someone, and only they will see what you say. Another feature is your console, you can see all whos online, offline, and friend requests. Your homepage you can decorate with stickers, which you buy by editing, and clicking the cataloug on the page. Over all its pretty fun if you love to chat. Hope that sums it all up!

Ive played Habbo for five years, and I have to say(since I was eleven). It is. And will always be. THE BEST. Regardless of the graphics. I don't play anymore, I consider myself a graduate. But it has been an experience that I wouldn't give it up for anything.
