Google

Google primarily provides search and advertising services, which together aim to organize and monetize the world’s information. In addition to its dominant search engine, it offers a plethora of tools and platforms including its more popular products: Gmail, Maps and YouTube. Most of its Web-based products are free because Google makes its money from highly integrated online advertising through its AdWords and AdSense platforms. Google promotes the idea that advertising should be highly targeted and relevant to users thus providing them with a rich source of information.

Google has also made strong moves into the web-based apps space with acquisitions including Jotspot (documents), 2Web Technologies (spreadsheets) and Zenter (presentations). They have also made huge splashes with recent acquisitions of YouTube, DoubleClick and Feedburner.

In 1996, Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page famously started the search company in a Stanford dorm room. The two eventually moved the company to a Menlo Park garage, which the company quickly outgrew. Sun Microsystems founder Andy Bechtolsheim was the company’s first investor with other notable investors including Ron Conway, John Doerr, Mike Moritz and Ram Shriram.

Eric Schmidt is the CEO and Chairman.

Major Search competitors include Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask.

As long as Google stays with the current owners, you know you will always get quality technology from Google.

Google is some doing great things right now... I like that they have made a lot of acquisitions, and diversified into different areas than just search. YouTube is great for instance, and has surely benefited the whole world in it's existence, regardless if people are a 'customer' or not.

Google ROCKS!!! This is the word of mouth for techie people like me... When you need to research about anything, specially computers that we want to know.. We just said.. "Google it"....

Hi I'm from Russia and we have around three search engines here available, and Yandex takes first place of the russian market, but I think it's just a matter of time before Google comes over. They've already have almost 50%, cuz google search is content-based, unlike others which are money-based (i'm talking about russian search engines). So Google rocks, and that's it! ;)

Here is another thought. You want to find something. You enter the term in Google. The engine say "hummm, good question. I am not sure but try there zillion links". I think there is still lot room for improvement for Google and other in this space.

Recent search algorithm refinement has seen better, more accurate and reliable search results for Internet users. This I believe has been the pivotal factor that allows this Giant to take on established players like Yahoo. Well Done Google!

Google is killing the competition right now. I wonder how long they can keep it up.

I think Google has great prospects. While they solely rely on adWords right now, they are coming out with more and more revenue streams. I am looking forward to the acquisition between Google/Yahoo in the future. Seems like a huge war between Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo.
