G.ho.st

An acronym for the Global Hosted Operating SysTem, G.ho.st (pronounced “ghost”) is a free virtual computer that hosts all of your data and applications on the web so that they are accessible from any Internet browser and not tied down locally to any one computer. G.ho.st combines multiple web software applications in their virtual computer to provide users with a web desktop, webmail, online file system, 3 GB of storage, single sign in, and sharing. The company also makes sure to keep users’ globally hosted files/applications secure and backed up.

Recently founded in 2006, G.ho.st is self-funded by company founder and CEO Zvi Schreiber. G.ho.st actually launched in 2007 and is currently in public Alpha. The company plans on releasing a Beta version later in 2007.

Not only is it unique in its vision to create a free, fully functional, and globally accessible virtual computer, G.ho.st is also unique for putting together a collaborative team in the heart of the Middle East. With a wall at the West Bank dividing them in two, the G.ho.st team is comprised of both Israelis and Palestinians, and prides itself on collaboration. The company should be lauded for their efforts to bridge the differences between the two sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as they have also pledged 10% of their founding equity to a G.ho.st Peace Foundation.

Primary competitors: eyeOS, Desktoptwo, and YouOS.

I have just checked it after reading this article. There is a demo account that can be used, and the application loads OK (no black screen). The application does not currently have many applications but it does have a few that you can test, including a basic browser, IM, and Email, and other smaller things. I only tested the browser and it seems to work, though it is still in alpha stage and it does lack many of the useful features. The application looks very promising, and the collaborative concept (between Israelis and Palestinians) also sounds very interesting too. We have to wait and see how far will they be able to bring this application in terms of usability and reliability. Hussein!

I checked out this virtual desktop just a few minutes ago. While I didn't spend hours jumping into its innermost infrastructure, I did spend some time looking at its surface. I am impressed. The idea of having a desktop with everything I would want from movies, to music, to documents has always been something every "g33k" has desired. I am no different. The interface of GHOST is a complete flash interface. The GUI is very (maybe too much) vista looking. The 'software' (virtualware) supports a few clock widgets on the desktop and even a clock on the 'go' bar. (very windows). I would not, however, recommend this as a desktop replacement (an addition would be fine) seeing as how I don't think that a development for doing everything usually does with his/her PC is readily available and proficient enough to use frequently. Like burning cd's, uploading/watching movies etc...It would be nice to see its documents kind of morphed into a Google Documents functionality allowing you to pull your existing online documents right into the GHOST 'os'. One thing I found quite disappointing (or rather annoying) was that the scroll function on my mouse is not available. This is due no doubt to the flash interface. overall, I give this 'os' as a secondary emergency desktop for when you're unable to access your own a 4 out of 5 rating. Cheers, Chad Windnagle
