Famesource is a social networking website which connects aspiring talent with fans to help them acquire the fame they deserve. Categories include Music, Art, Acting, Comedy, Sports, Modeling, Dance and Other.
Users create a free profile and then upload media of their talent to be judged by the rest of the community. Images, audio, and video files can be directly uploaded to the Famesource server, but embedding media content from other sites like YouTube is also acceptable. Users vote to “Fame” or “Shame” a media, and the vote counter is adjusted up or down accordingly. Each media is then ranked within its respective category according to the number of votes. Media with the highest votes from each category becomes featured on the front page of the site. This Digg-like ranking system lets Famesource’s users decide who will become the next web-celeb.
People can add themselves as a Fan of talent they admire, and can use the available promote features to spread the word about a talent. Some of these features include emailing contacts, sharing on Facebook, posting to MySpace, and sharing on popular social bookmarking websites. Along with these viral features, Famesource now allows their users to get onto the small screen.
Famesource uses a pseudo-currency called “Famebucks” for internal transactions. Famebucks can either be earned (by voting, gaining fans, and inviting friends to join) or purchased using PayPal. Fans can donate these Famebucks to talent they admire, who then redeem Famebucks for a spot on the Wall of Fame. The Wall of Fame is a popular section of the site for talent looking for more exposure. Users bid to have their media featured on the Wall of Fame, with outbid media dropping to subordinate spots.
After receiving funding in March 2008, Famesource changed it’s name to “Taltopia” (a combination of the word “talent” and “utopia”)
