Docstoc

Docstoc is trying to become a YouTube for documents geared toward professionals.

Docstoc’s CEO Jason Lawrence Nazar told us the idea for docstoc originated while working on his other venture, Venature.com. Venature provides consulting and capital to startups. Jason would often spend two hours/day looking online for documents the startups needed such as forms, NDAs, etc. He wondered why there wasn’t something like YouTube for documents. In September of 2006, he decided to make it himself and Docstoc was born.

Scribd is another site aiming to become the “YouTube for documents.” However, it is not geared towards professionals like Docstoc.

I think scribd has got a considerable lead on them, even if they are considered niche players. Docstoc's second Series A round will certainly help them evolve their strategy There are a number of companies emerging in the document sharing space. One company that I recently heard about through a friend stands out. The company is called bookgoo - http://www.bookgoo.com. They have been really quiet. But, the site is quite interesting. They are running a closed alpha right now. But you can win an invitation by playing a pacman game and obtaining a certain score. It's cute, and certainly nothing I've seen before with closed sites. The site itself allows you to highlight and annotate sections of the document. Takes a variety of doc types including URLs. Very compelling experience.
