Craigslist

Craigslist is a supremely popular listings site. Craigslist was founded by Craig Newmark in March, 1995, as an email list site for San Francisco and Bay Area events. In June 2000, it added its second city, Boston, and then expanded to the major metropolitan cities in August 2000. As of February 2008, Craiglist now covers 450 in 50 US States and 50 Countries.

Craiglist.org – note the .org domain suffix – is interesting in that it serves no ads and stresses a non-corporate culture. It has only 25 employees, all based in San Francisco, and makes money off job ads in 10 cities, as well as brokered apartment listings in NYC.

In April 2008 Ebay sued Craigslist over stock dilution issues.

Milestones

  • 6/10/09 — Craigslist Revenues top $100m
  • 7/08 — Jeremy Zawodny leaves Yahoo for Craigslist.

I've found and sold a lot of things (jobs, cars, bike, furniture, room, etc.) and offered and used services on Craigslist (movers, massage, hookers, designers, printers, free stuff, etc.) Worked out pretty well overall.

Search All Craigslist - March 4, 2009 at 12:09am
I kinda disagree with the previous posters. Craigslist's interface is a nightmare. Having people to spent hours trying to find stuff or apartments on craigslist is a shame. That's why there's always a demand for sites like searchallofcraiglists.com, http://craiglook.com and craigshelper.com which bring usability to the 90's craigslist interface Cheers, -Darrell

I found no help using Graig's list in my jopes of finding a suitable job. I did however, find bogus job offers which were promptly reported to the Attorney General's office. Also, I don't recommend the forums as they are plagued by people who use their group strength to get rid of any opposing view point. There are some people who have been on their site for years. It's just a big clique of "boot happy" people. I would NOT recommend this site for those reasons. The owners of Craig's list obviously have a problem with the first ammendment. If you don't believe in the constitution, I feel that you have no right to opperate a business in this country.

Warren, as of right now there are only 9 total jobs listed on shopandsave. NINE!! How is that the best site out there? Good idea, but needs to market itself quite a bit more.

craigslist.com is a great site. But to basic. The best site out there is shopandsave.com They have classified ads with video and they work just like craigslist.com They also seperated the classifieds and the corperate ads with local deals. Its briliant.
