BitTorrent

BitTorrent Inc is the company founded by the creator of the algorithm of the same name. The company’s purpose to use the algorithm’s ability to transmit large quantities of data across the internet to legally sell content and help companies distribute their own content. To this end, the company sells movies, television shows, music, and software through its client, and helps other companies sell content using peer-to-peer distribution. It is also working with oem manufacturers to ensure that BitTorrent technology is built into the next generation of set-top boxes and other consumer electronics categories.

Each part of BitTorrent’s business is already served by major players. In the content sales business, iTunes is largest online reseller of not only music but also movies and television shows. However, using BitTorrent’s peer-to-peer system items bought from their store can be downloaded much faster than a comparable product bought through iTunes. Content Delivery Networks such as Akamai, EdgeCast Networks and others uses different distributed computing technique from BitTorrent to accelerate downloads. Finally, many other Web 2.0 companies are trying to integrate their technologies into consumer products. The inclusion of YouTube in the AppleTV,is just one notable example of this.
