BIOCRATES has dedicated its research activities to the youngest addition of the ‘omics’ quartet of systems biology, i.e., metabolomics, the study of the body’s small-molecule metabolites. The metabolomics approach to biomarker development holds particular promise in that it provides a snapshot of the physiological state of an organism as determined by its genetic setup, protein regulation and abundance, and environmental influences. Rather than attempting to elucidate the effect a particular gene or protein may have on the organism, metabolomics looks at the tail end of how diseases or drugs influence the human body.
