Big Think, launched in January 2008, is a site that serves as a public forum for users to interact with public intellectuals in numerous fields.
The site’s producers have records thousands of hours of footage from interviews of numerous experts, allowing users to see what today’s leaders feel about broader issues, such as global warming and the two-party system. These interviews are searchable by topic, expert question. Users can respond to these ideas by posting their own videos or questions to experts, creating a conversation in the public sphere. Users can also spark conversations of their own by posting their own original ideas and questions, putting them up for debate.
Founders of Big Think originally envisioned the site as a YouTube for intellectuals, and see it already becoming a source of primary information for college students. Moving forward, the forum will focus on Action Plans, and leveraging its knowledge network. While slowly moving away from the YouTube model, a strong focus on crowd-sourcing, rating and direct user/expert interaction will remain.
