Acquia (pronounced “AH-qwee-uh”) is a new startup planning to develop software and network services for the popular Drupal open source web publishing and collaboration platform.
Although there is no outright and explicit relationship between Acquia and the Drupal Association, note that co-founder Buytaert is the project lead of Drupal.
Acquia considers themselves to be the Red Hat of the Drupal community, and they may be onto something. Drupal allows people to build powerful websites with little effort simply by combining different modules into one site. Acquia can greatly capitalize on this market by selling a wide variety of electronic services intended to be useful to people developing and operating Drupal websites.
In March 2008, Acquia announced plans to ship a commercially supported distribution of Drupal, code-named “Carbon.”
